If you just heard someone screaming, “What the fuck” it was me after hearing the actor and comedian Mel Smith has suddenly died. He was only 60 years old. The news was first tweeted by the author Kathy Lette. At first nobody believed her, but the BBC’s website have now confirmed the sad news.
So far there are no details as to why Mel died so unexpectedly.
Mel came into acting via the Oxford University dramatic society. He spent time at the Young Vic, but he fell out with director Michael Bogdanov. When he quit, he told his father, a bookmaker, that he was ready to take over his business but the following day he was invited to join a new show Not The Nine O’Clock News, with Rowan Atkinson, Pamela Stephenson and Griff Rhys Jones.
Mel also turned his hand to directing TV ads and directed some big time films for the cinema too, including The Tall Guy and Mr Bean.
Mel had an addiction to the over the counter pain killer, Nurofen Plus and once had his ass hospitalised after taking more than 50 in one day. It’s not known if this had anything to do with his untimely death today.
Mel is survived by his wife of over 20 years Pam.
Rest in Peace Mel Smith, your humour will last me forever.
UPDATE: Everyone’s now saying Mel died after suffering a heart attack.
